Hey everyone! One of the first things you’ll need to sort out when you arrive in Canada is getting your Social Insurance Number (SIN), setting up a bank account, and getting a phone plan. These are super important for daily life!
Your SIN is a 9-digit number that you need to work in Canada and access government benefits. Applying is free and pretty straightforward, usually done at a Service Canada office. You can find more info here: https://www.canada.ca/en/employment-social-development/services/sin/apply.html
For banking, you’ll want to open an account as soon as possible. Most major banks (like RBC, CIBC, Scotiabank, TD, BMO, National Bank) offer newcomer packages. It’s a good idea to compare their offerings, as some have no-fee options for newcomers. You’ll usually need your passport and proof of address.
And a phone plan? Essential for staying connected! Canada has a few main providers (Rogers, Bell, Telus) and several smaller ones (Fido, Koodo, Freedom Mobile, Public Mobile). You can choose between pre-paid or post-paid plans. Pre-paid can be a good option initially if you’re still getting settled.
Let’s share our experiences and tips on these initial setups!
