Hey, great thread! For my SIN, I just needed my Confirmation of Permanent Residence and my passport. It was super quick, walked in and out in about 15 minutes at the Service Canada office. For opening a bank account, I went with RBC and they were really helpful. They have specific new immigrant packages that waive fees for a while, which was a nice bonus. Definitely recommend checking those out when you’re comparing banks!

Good to know about RBC’s new immigrant packages – I was leaning towards CIBC, but maybe I’ll give RBC a look too. Are the fee waivers for a set period, or do they have other benefits bundled in? It’s always great to save on banking fees when you’re just starting out.

Applying for the provincial health card was pretty straightforward, but the waiting period for it to become active felt long! I’d say apply as soon as you’re eligible. As for finding a family doctor, that was definitely the trickiest part for me. I used Health Care Connect (in Ontario) and also asked neighbours for recommendations. Don’t give up, it takes time! 😅

For a family doctor, I’m planning to register on the provincial ‘find a doctor’ waitlist, like Health Care Connect in Ontario: https://hcc3.hcc.moh.gov.on.ca/. I’ve heard it can take a while, so starting early is key. Also, definitely check out the newcomer services in your city for support!
